Information Broker, Commercial Intelligence
Commercial Intelligence values, packages and places information that arrives at Starlight Servers in the ordinary course of operating a network. The desk has run since 1994 and is the second-largest contributor to group margin after colocation. This is a broking seat: you hold the book, you price, you place.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a book of standing buyers — currently 214 across four regions — and their declared interests. Undeclared interests are inferred and recorded separately.
- Price inbound cache on the desk schedule. Where the schedule does not reach, price it yourself and defend the number at Thursday review.
- Place packaged product with buyers under the standard non-attribution terms. Attribution is never offered, including to the buyer, including on request.
- Maintain the provenance ledger. Every item carries a chain; items whose chain cannot be closed are held, not discarded.
- Flag to Regulatory anything that reads as personal rather than commercial. Personal material is out of scope for this desk and there is a form.
- Report weekly on the spread between held inventory and placed value. Held inventory currently stands at 19 months of placements.
Requirements
- Four years in a broking, research-sales or commercial-intelligence seat, with a book you can describe without naming it.
- Demonstrated ability to price an asset with no comparables and no market, then be wrong by a defensible margin.
- Discretion as a working habit rather than a stated value. Referees will be asked about this specifically.
- Willingness to work entirely on-site. The desk material does not leave the floor and neither does any device that has been on it.
- Tier 3 screening on offer.
Nice to have
- Languages. The book is four-region and the schedule is not.
- Prior gallery, auction-house or private-sale experience. The valuation instinct transfers better than a network background does.
- An existing buyer list. Bring it as a description, not as a file.
No acquisition activity is performed by this role. Acquisition is performed elsewhere in the group and the desk does not ask where.
Process
- Application read by the hiring manager, not by a filter. Five working days.
- Screening call, 30 minutes, with the recruiter for the team named on the requisition.
- Technical or desk conversation, 90 minutes, with two people you would work beside.
- Site visit, half a day, at the facility named on the requisition. You will walk a hall.
- Offer, with the band, the screening tier and the on-call obligation stated in writing.
