Data Centre Technician (Night Shift)

Night Watch keeps Grayling running between 22:00 and 06:00. You are the only person in the building for those eight hours. The work is remote hands, structured walks, and the first ninety seconds of anything that goes wrong; the shift lead is on a screen at Pale Harbour and is very good.

Responsibilities

• Walk Halls 1–6 hourly against the checklist. The walk is logged by badge and by hand; both logs are audited.
• Hall 7 is inspected remotely by Platform Defence and is not entered. There is no key on the night board for Hall 7 and requests for one are declined at shift level.
• Perform remote-hands tickets to the SLA: 15 minutes acknowledged, 60 minutes actioned.
• Respond to environmental and power alarms, execute the first three steps of the runbook, then escalate. Do not execute step four alone.
• Rack, cable and label new deployments during the quiet window (01:00–04:00), to the cable standard, which is not negotiable and is enforced by photograph.
• Hand over at 06:00 in writing. Anything you noticed but cannot explain goes in the handover; the handover has a field for it.

Requirements

• Two years in a data centre, workshop, plant room or equivalent hands-on environment.
• Structured cabling to a standard, and the discipline to keep to it at 03:00 with nobody watching.
• Comfortable working alone for a full shift in a building of 24,800 m². Some people are and some are not; the screening conversation is direct about it.
• Able to lift 25 kg to rack height and to work in 8 °C cold-aisle containment for extended periods.
• Right to work in the region and a clean driving record for the site vehicle.

Nice to have

• Electrical qualification to regional standard, or willingness to obtain one at our cost within 18 months.
• Optical splicing.
• Previous night-shift experience. We would rather you knew now whether it suits you.

Process

1. Application read by the hiring manager, not by a filter. Five working days.
2. Screening call, 30 minutes, with the recruiter for the team named on the requisition.
3. Technical or desk conversation, 90 minutes, with two people you would work beside.
4. Site visit, half a day, at the facility named on the requisition. You will walk a hall.
5. Offer, with the band, the screening tier and the on-call obligation stated in writing.
